Scientific illustration is the practice of representing a biological, chemical or physical process with enough accuracy to be published and enough clarity to be understood at a glance. It is not decoration: an illustration is an argument. It decides what the reader sees first, which relationships are made explicit and which details are deliberately simplified so the mechanism stays legible.

A good figure begins with the science, not with the software. I read the manuscript or protocol, agree with the corresponding author on what the figure must prove, and only then move to composition, colour and typography. That sequence is why figures come back from review with fewer comments.
